DESIGN-MURAL DESIGN WITH DEPTH

Trompe l’oeil, French for “trick the eye” is an illusionary art technique with a long history in Western art. The intention is to create an optical illusion, in that the viewer is given the impression that there is a three dimensional object or scene before them, not just a realistic image (see posts relevant to trompe l’oeil, in particular the post on Eric Grohe).

PLEASE POST A COMMENT THAT GIVES ME A) FEEDBACK ON WHAT YOU THINK MIGHT WORK FOR A THEME FOR OUR MURAL AND B) IF YOU SEE ANY SPECIFIC IDEAS/ARTISTS THAT WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO INCORPORATE INTO OUR PROJECT.

COMMENTS ARE DUE ON THURSDAY MARCH 11TH.

  1. I really like the Kurt Wenner "Dies Irae" one. I got my idea of peeling the paper back and seeing classroom from http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/06/07/article-1024884-0185F25600000578-477_468x420.jpg
This one is pretty good too> http://www.woostercollective.com/images/2006/06/banksybristol.jpg
It would be cute to incorporate that totoro thing into the mix too.

  2. Great choices Joe! Kurt Wenner, an architect, coincidence?! I don't think so...
The only trick for us will be to develop an idea that works for a wall as opposed to a floor.

  3. I agree with Joe about a Banksy-esque mural. Here are some of my favorites:

I think it would be cool to have an Alice in Wonderland themed mural since the movie just came out...

If we can't put art on the floors, how about the ceilings? if we replace the characters with Alice and the White Rabbit then voila, we're inside the Rabbit Hole!

  4. Alyssa I think that is a really cool idea. It just might be hard to do a mural on the ceiling... that could work on a wall as well though. It would be really hard and take a really long time to make this look realistic and like it is really going into the wall.

  5. I like these ideas...I also think it'd be a good idea to do something like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/58/168335439_496e587c0f.jpg I like the road idea, but i think it'd be better to add like our own graffiti on the walls like in a city or something.
I like the idea of like an optical illusion or something hard to figure out. I don't really have any examples of this...I also think that a mural of different staircases could be cool, or something like this: http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getposter.asp&APNum=274658&CID=FC11D4BABA7849079225CC5F4EA8E989&PPID=1&search=78701&f=c&FindID=78701&P=1&PP=4&sortby=PD&cname=M.+C.+Escher&SearchID= (kind of random)

  6. The Eric Grohe murals are very admirable, especially because of the "viewers" present in the painting. If we had people in our mural that appeared to be looking at the mural, it might be very cool. (My idea with the arch and balcony might work this way.)
The style of the John Pugh murals appealed to me most. Some people were actually fooled into complaining about holes in the walls or dropped their glasses by trying to place them on the "shelf." If we can incorporate that sense of reality, or believable illusion, our mural would be really great. I think that theme of reality, especially if it included a broad landscape in the background, like Groge's work, would be ideal.

Also, I looked up the pronunciation of trompe d'oeil because I was curious and it is pronounced Tromp-Doy.

    a guy named Yves Lanthier.
I still like the idea of like a huge chunk of wall missing. revealing a secret room some where in the school. Thats what I was kind of going for back in the day when i drew out the sketch for that mural was created by the media center. ( which NEEDS to be painted over if I may add)

  8. Painting over Jess' old mural across from the lmc might be a good choice. (especially since it is large enough for the size of our group and it dealt with some similar issues of depth that we can improve on.) We have a strong group so I think we can pull off a realistic image. A Banksy-ish image would be fine as long as it is appropriate. An Alice in Wonderland theme would be fine if there was a clever twist.

  10. i love the alice in wonderland idea. but i'd think it would be more of the original alice in wonderland as opposed to the new one. i also really liked the link jess put up. i think it would be awesome if we did the hole in the wall type of idea, but we could fill the hole with alice in wonderland type artwork.

  11. i like the idea of making it look like your in a hole looking up and the giant wave is a stellar idea too and maybe making it look like pieces of debris from things are comming at you

  12. I think the idea of looking up from the bottom of a hole is an interesting perspective.
