CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS MY FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT EXPECTATION IS THAT YOU DO YOUR PERSONAL BEST. THERE ARE NO “WON’TS” OR “CAN’TS”. YOU WILL NEED TO GET A SKETCHBOOK THAT IS 9 X 12 OR LARGER. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE GIVEN ON MONDAYS AND DUE ON FRIDAYS. THESE COUNT FOR 20% OF YOUR GRADE. RESPECT For class environment- Students are expected to arrive on time. Please be seated and ready for class to begin once the bell has rung. The three strike policy is in effect. At your third tardiness without a valid pass, detentions begin. Talking about class-appropriate topics at your own table is fine unless it is disrupting to you, others or Mr. P. Music will be allowed in class when dialogues are not in progress. Feel free to bring in music that is appropriate for school. Headphones are negotiable but they are a privilege, not a right. The use of cell phones during class time is not allowed even if it your parents calling/texting. Phones should be off and out of sight during class. Texting in class will result in the following: 1st offense is a warning, 2nd offense results in your phone being taken for the class period, 3rd results in your phone being handed over to Mr. Modestow for you to pick up at the end of the day, and 4th offense will require your parents to see Mr. Modestow to get your phone back. If there are occasions that phones can be used for reference or purposes directly related to classroom activity, please ask Mr. P for permission. For others- You are expected to extend common courtesy to others. Be helpful and pleasant. Never make fun of another student, or his/her artwork. Please make marks on your artwork only. Keep criticism constructive please. Use language responsibly please! For materials- Use materials only as directed. Do not use materials that you do not have permission from Mr. P for, some can be dangerous. Let’s not waste materials, they are expensive and often not easily replaced. For Mr. P- Please ask before removing anything from Mr. P’s desk or cabinets etc... Please be attentive when the class is being addressed. One cannot effectively talk and listen simultaneously. For time- Since we do not have a lot of time and setting up/cleaning up uses up that time, please use class time wisely. A large part of your grades are dependent on how you use your time. Never leave the room without letting Mr. P know your destination. Please remain seated until the bell rings, no lining up at the door. SAFETY Do not throw anything Always act with regard for safety Be aware of evacuation procedures CLEAN-UP If you use it, put it away properly. If you spill it, wipe it up. Clean at least one quarter of the worktable each day Do not leave a single thing on the table top (including eraser shreds, which you are expected to brush into the trash, not the floor) Put your chair up at the end of class Never leave anything in the sink HAVE FUN The goal of all my classes is to learn new skills and grow as an individual and an artist. If the above information is adhered to, we will have fun and learn at the same time. -remember, our focus is process before product.

THE ARTIST YOU CHOOSE MUST BE OF A DIFFERENT RACE AND GENDER THAN YOURSELF. THE ARTIST MUST BE APPROVED BY MR. P BEFORE YOU BEGIN. THE ARTIST CAN WORK WITH ANY MEDIUM OF DRAWING OR PAINTING (PASTELS, OILS, ACRYLICS…) AS LONG AS THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ART WORLD IN A SIGNIFICANT WAY. STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE AN INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS BEEN A FIGURE IN POP CULTURE FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE DECADES. ACTORS, ATHLETES, POLITICIANS, MUSICIANS ETC... WE WILL BE WORKING ON A 16 X 20 CANVAS BOARD THAT WILL BE SPLIT INTO 4 EQUAL SPACES. STUDENTS WILL BEGIN BY FINDING PHOTO REFERENCES OF THIS PERSON AND DRAW LIKENESSES IN EACH OF THE FOUR SPACES. THE UPPER LEFT CORNER WILL BE THE EARLIEST OF THE FOUR, THE UPPER RIGHT, THE FOLLOWING DECADE, BOTTOM LEFT AND THEN BOTTOM RIGHT IS THE MOST CURRENT. WE WILL BE USING FLAT COLORS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR IMAGES IN A WARHOL STYLE. EACH IMAGE SHOULD SHOWCASE COMPLETELY SEPERATE COLOR COMBINATIONS.

What is Industrial Design?



Industrial design is a multi-disciplinary field of design. “What is Industrial Design?” is a somewhat broad question because industrial design may include a number of different sub-divisions of design. These sub-categories of industrial design may include furniture design, packaging design, car design, product design, lighting design, and a whole number of other types of jobs in applied three-dimensional arts.

Industrial design specifically differentiates itself from these other specific types of design by focussing on the industrialized process. For the most part, everything that an industrial designer creates is intended to be mass produced. Inherent in the design of the object is the design of the process in which the object is made. The question What is Industrial Design ? can have many answers because industrial design overall is focussed on the process by which things are produced, more so then producing a specific item.

Industrial Design Definition
Industrial design is a field that blends together art and engineering with the general goal of creating an object for production. Industrial Design differs from the field of Product Design in that industrial design focusses around objects of industry. Industrial design is a multi-disciplinary field that involves many other aspects of design including graphic design, packaging, furniture, and many more.

Industrial design basically combines applied art and applied science with solid business acumen to create and design a product that is functional, useable and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

History of Industrial Design
To fully understand what is industrial design, it is important to know the origins of the industry. Industrial design really got its start at the beginning of the twentieth century. Along with growth in technology and the industrialization of the Western world’s manufacturing capabilities, came a need for someone to engineer this process. The phrase “industrial design” was first conceived of by the New Zealand based Joseph Claude Sinel in 1919. In the early days of industrial design, the role of the industrial designer was to merge mass-market production techniques with the skills of traditional craftsmanship.

What is Industrial Design Used For?
The industrial design process is essentially applied to every product that is manufactured and used by consumers. It takes the idea for a new product from the concept stage, through design and refinement to actual production of the final product. The overall aim of industrial design is to basically ensure that a product functions well and does the job required, has an attractive appearance, and is appealing to customers so that it sells. Industrial designers work in a huge number of product categories, with most specializing in a particular field of work. This can range from household appliances to technology devices, furniture, toys, automobiles, tools and a host of other categories.

SHAPE- 2D AREA THAT IS DEFINED AS EITHER ORGANIC OR GEOMETRIC. A SHAPE HAS ONLY HEIGHT AND WIDTH, NO DEPTH.

FORM- OBJECTS HAVING 3 DIMENSIONS, HEIGHT, WIDTH AND DEPTH.

COLOR-AN ELEMENT DERIVED FROM REFLECTED LIGHT. COLOR HAS THREE PROPERTIES:
HUE- NAMES OF THE COLORS
VALUE- LIGHTNESS OR DARKNESS
INTENSITY- PURITY OF THE HUE OR CHROME

TEXTURE- THE DEGREE OF ROUGHNESS OR SMOOTHNESS OF AN OBJECT. CAN BE TACTILE OR VISUAL

PRINCIPLES

BALANCE- THE CONCERN OF EQUALIZING VISUAL FORCES OR ELEMENTS IN A WORK OF ART

MOVEMENT- TO CREATE THE LOOK AND FEELING OF ACTION AND GUIDE THE VIEWER'S EYE THROUGH THE WORK OF ART.

RHYTHM- INDICATING MOVEMENT BY THE REPETITION OF ELEMENTS OR OBJECTS.

PATTERN- 2 DIMENSIONAL DECORATIVE VISUAL REPETITION, PATTERN HAS NO MOVEMENT.

EMPHASIS- MAKING ONE PART OF A WORK DOMINANT OVER THE OTHER PARTS.

CONTRAST- REFERING TO THE PLACEMENT OF OPPOSITES NEAR ONE ANOTHER. THIS CREATES VISUAL INTEREST, DRAMA AND OR EXCITEMENT.

POP ART-PSA


CHOOSE A TOPIC FOR A PSA. TRY TO MAKE A CHOICE THAT HAS STRONG MEANING FOR YOU. IT COULD BE MAKING PEOPLE AWARE OF AN ILLNESS OR IT COULD BE A HUMOROUS MESSAGE. WE WILL CREATE AN 16 x 20 POSTER THAT WILL INCORPORATE TEXT AND IMAGERY. THE TEXT CHOICES SHOULD BUILD ON OUR EXPERIENCE FROM THE LAST ASSIGNMENT. MAKE MINDFUL CHOICES OF FONT AS WELL AS THE COLORS AND HOW YOU CHOOSE TO RENDER THEM. THERE MUST BE AN EMPHASIS WITHIN THE TEXT'S MESSAGE WHICH CAN BE ACHIEVED A NUMBER OF WAYS. A WORD OR WORDS COULD BE WRITTEN IN A LARGER POINT SIZE OR PERHAPS A DIFFERENT COLOR, MAYBE EVEN SOME DIFFERENT TREATMENT. POP ART SYNOPSIS

Pop Art class will focus on various facets of popular culture- visual art (comic books/video games/contemporary art/pop art), music, sports, television/film, politics, current events.

Students will be given a variety of assignments that deal with issues in popular culture. Each student will create their own blog to create solutions for assignments which will deal with both writing and imagery. Students will be asked to explore new ground as well as apply their own interests to assignments. We will create designs/logo for an imaginary sports team (perhaps from an imaginary sport?!), a portrait of a politician that delivers a message/point of view without the use of any text, a p.s.a. based on a current event, storyboards for a movie trailer or commercial, a comic book page that tells a story through the use of sequential art, character design for a video game as well as studying a figure from the Pop Art movement itself.

ADVANCED ART SYLLABUS PURCELL

IN ADVANCED ART WE WILL BE WORKING WITH A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES AND MEDIA. WE WILL BE ENTERING TWO CONTESTS.

EXPLORATION WILL INCLUDE:PEN AND INK TECHNIQUES SUCH AS STIPPLING AND CROSSHATCHING. WE WILL EXPLORE USING PENS AS WELL AS CROW QUILLS AND BRUSH.

PERSPECTIVE WILL BE USED IN ONE PROJECT THAT WILL REQUIRE THE USE OF STRONG AND SPECIFIC CRAFTSMANSHIP.

CONCEPTUAL WORK WILL BE A FOCUS AS STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A CONCEPT AND EXPECTED TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM THROUGH THE USE OF CREATIVITY AND ACCURATE RESEARCH.

STUDENTS WILL WORK WITH CHOOSING MASTER PAINTINGS TO BASE THEIR WORK ON FOR AT LEAST ONE ASSIGNMENT. THERE WILL BE A FOCUS ON MIXING AND APPLYING COLORS ACCURATELY.

WEEKLY SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS WILL COUNT AS 20% OF THE FINAL GRADE. ONE HOUR OF WORK IS THE MINIMUM THAT WILL BE EXPECTED FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT. STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO HAVE A 9X12 OR LARGER SKETCHBOOK. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED, BUT WILL DROP A LETTER GRADE EACH DAY THEY ARE LATE.

THERE WILL BE A FINAL PROJECT THAT WILL INVOLVE WRITING AS WELL AS CREATING A PIECE OF ARTWORK. THIS WILL COUNT FOR 20% OF STUDENTS’ FINAL GRADE AS WELL.

THE FINAL PROJECT FOR PORTFOLIO WILL BE TO WRITE A TWO-THREE PAGE PAPER ON THE FOLOWING:

A. YOUR EXPERIENCE IN PREPARING AND PRESENTING YOUR PORTFOLIO. WHAT WERE THE MOST CHALLENGING AND DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE PROCESS? THE MOST FUN? REWARDING?

B. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST AND DID THEY HAVE ANY IMPACT ON YOUR PRODUCTION OF THE PORTFOLIO? IF SO, HOW?

C. WHAT WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE OR DEVELOPMENT IN YOUR WORK DURING THIS CLASS? DID YOU FIND A NEW MEDIUM THAT YOU HAVE EMBRACED, OR SUBJECTS THAT YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH?

THE ARTIST CAN BE FROM ANY ERA AND WORK WITH ANY PAINTING MEDIUM (PASTELS, OILS, ACRYLICS…) AS LONG AS THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ART WORLD IN A SIGNIFICANT WAY. (PLEASE AVOID WRITING A PAPER ABOUT AN UNCLE WHO LIKES TO PAINT ETC…)

PART TWO IS TO PAINT A 9 X 12 IMAGE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE QUALITIES OF THAT ARTIST’S WORK. THINK ABOUT THEIR COLOR CHOICES, TECHNIQUES THAT THEY EMPLOYED TO CREATE THE WORK, COMPOSITION, SUBJECT MATTER AND PHILOSOPHY. WE ARE NOT DUPLICATING AN EXISTING WORK, BUT CREATING AN ORIGINAL PIECE.

OPTION #2
WORK IN A GROUP (STUDENTS AT YOUR CURRENT TABLE ONLY) AND CREATE A “MASHUP” OF ALL YOUR ARTISTS ON A CEILING TILE. THE IMAGE SHOULD MAKE SENSE AS A WHOLE AND DISPLAY THE SAME QUALITIES LISTED IN THE CRITERIA LISTED FOR OPTION #1. EACH STUDENT WILL BE GRADED ON THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE TILE.

CERAMICS FINAL PROJECT

PART 1

1-2 page paper about an artist of your choice who works in 3D. Paper is double spaced, listing all sources. Research the artist’s background and their body of work. What are they known for, their training, what medium do they work in, what are their influences…?
Please bring in at least one full color image of their work to show the class so everyone leaves learning something about each student’s subject.

No use of Wikipedia and no plagiarism of any kind.

PART 2

GROUP PROJECT

Students will choose a group to work with which could be their entire table or you could switch things up as long as you have a total of 3 people in your group.
As a class, we will choose a topic and then each group will create a set of pieces that explores a sub category of that topic. For example, if the class votes on ZOO as the topic, one group could choose arctic animals, another could choose repiles, another insects etc…
Your work should include some kind of environment for your subjects to inhabit.

Group project-50% of final project grade
Paper-40% of final project grade
Presentation-10% of final project grade
FINAL PROJECT IS 20% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE
