Ceramics final project
MR. PURCELL 5/13
CERAMICS
PART 1
2 page paper about an artist of your choice who works in any 3D medium (not chalk artists who create drawings that appear to be 3D). Paper is double spaced, listing all sources. Research the artist’s background and their body of work. What are they known for, what kind of training did they have, what medium do they work in, what are their influences…?
Please bring in at least one full color image of their work to show the class during your presentation so everyone leaves learning something about each student’s subject.
Plagiarism of any kind results in a zero.
PART 2
GROUP PROJECT
Students will choose a group to work with which could be their entire table or you could switch things up as long as you have a total of 3 people in your group.
As a class, we will choose a topic and then each group will create a set of pieces that explores a sub category of that topic. For example, if the class votes on ZOO as the topic, one group could choose arctic animals, another could choose reptiles, another insects etc…
Your work should include some kind of environment for your subjects to inhabit.
Group project-50% of final project grade
Paper-40% of final project grade
Presentation-10% of final project grade
FINAL PROJECT IS 20% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE

Drawing and Painting Self-portrait final
MR. PURCELL 5/13
DRAWING AND PAINTING FINAL PROJECT
Self-Portrait
FINAL PROJECTS WILL BE PRESENTED DURING THE EXAM BLOCK.
Write a 2 page double spaced paper on an artist of your choice. Please include a works cited page as well. Your artist must be approved by Mr. P before you begin. The artist must be one who created/creates self-portraits and can be from any era and work with any painting medium (pastels, oils, acrylics…) as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (Please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
There are many qualities you could choose to focus on such as how subject matter is presented, scale, medium, color choices/use of color, time eras, stylistic choices, meaning/intent… Analyze what the artist is trying to accomplish h and how they do so. (for instance, why did Monet use the colors he did?) There are very specific reasons for this which would require research and understanding of the artists’ work.
Part two of this project is to create a full color 9 x 12 self-portrait that is both a likeness of yourself in some way and that represents the artist’s stylistic approach. Do not replicate a piece, but create your own based on the artist’s body of work. The medium is up to you.
Presentations during the exam block will be brief but should present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artists. You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. This project counts for 20% of your grade!
Please be sure not to plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero!! Please be careful not to cut and paste or re-word from any web site or book.
We will have time to research, so choose a subject you can have fun with!

FOUNDATIONS FINAL PROJECT
FINAL PROJECTS WILL BE PRESENTED DURING THE EXAM BLOCK.
WRITE A 2 PAGE DOUBLE SPACED PAPER ON AN ARTIST OF YOUR CHOICE. THE ARTIST MUST BE APPROVED BY MR. P BEFORE YOU BEGIN. THE ARTIST CAN BE FROM ANY ERA AND WORK WITH ANY MEDIUM AS LONG AS THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ART WORLD IN A SIGNIFICANT WAY. (PLEASE AVOID WRITING A PAPER ABOUT AN UNCLE WHO LIKES TO PAINT ETC…)
YOUR PAPER SHOULD EXPLAIN THE ART MOVEMENT(S)/PERIOD THE ARTIST WAS INVOLVED IN, THEIR BACKGROUND/HISTORY AND TRAINING, AND WHAT MAKES THEIR WORK SIGNIFICANT IN THE ART WORLD. DISCUSS WHY YOU CHOSE THIS ARTIST AND FIND OUT ABOUT THEIR CREATIVE PROCESS; WHAT SIZE WAS THEIR WORK, HOW DID THEY GO ABOUT CREATING THEIR WORK, WHAT KIND OF SUBJECTS DID HE OR SHE WORK WITH? INCLUDE A WORKS CITED PAGE.
PART TWO IS TO PAINT A 9 X 12 IMAGE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE QUALITIES OF THAT ARTIST’S WORK. THINK ABOUT THEIR COLOR CHOICES, TECHNIQUES THAT THEY EMPLOYED TO CREATE THE WORK, COMPOSITION, SUBJECT MATTER AND PHILOSOPHY. WE ARE NOT DUPLICATING AN EXISTING WORK, BUT CREATING AN ORIGINAL PIECE.

MS3D FLW
MS3D PURCELL
If you were given an unlimited budget and your client (in this case Frontier Regional School) wanted the art rooms redesigned to be practical and comfortable, what would you do? The other condition is that your design must be Frank Lloyd Wright influenced and be based on his architectural philosophy.
Make two lists to begin:
1. Practical items that you must include in the spaces such as a kiln for the ceramics room
2. What qualities would you like the art rooms to have in order to be most effective, practical and aesthetically pleasing.
Begin a sketch of the interior spaces. Consider a few things:
Each room needs space to hold at least 25 students
What materials will you use? Colors? Light?
What are the limitations of the current space as well as it’s potential?
Safety
We will construct a 3D version of your sketch primarily using chipboard, foam core, and colored papers.
Remember to include as many elements of FLW’s work as you can based on your reading and dvd viewing.
